The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Civil Service Examination (CSE) in India, a nationwide competitive exam for recruitment to various government services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Revenue Service (IRS). The examination comprises two phases: the Preliminary examination with objective-type papers in General Studies and Aptitude Test, followed by the Main examination with nine conventional (essay) papers and a Personality Test (Interview). The entire process, from the Preliminary examination notification to the final results declaration, spans approximately one year. Preliminary Examination
Structure: The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers - General Studies
Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT). Both papers are objective-type
multiple-choice questions.
General Studies Paper-I: Covers topics such as
current events, history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and general
science.
General Studies Paper-II (CSAT): Tests aptitude, reasoning, and
comprehension skills.
Main Examination
Structure: The Main Examination is more extensive and
consists of nine papers, out of which two papers are qualifying in nature
(Indian language and English). Qualifying Papers: These include Indian language
paper and English paper to test language skills and communication
abilities.
Compulsory Papers: Essay, General Studies (Paper-I to Paper-IV),
Optional Paper-I, Optional Paper-II.
Optional Papers: Aspirants can choose
one optional subject from a list of subjects, which includes literature,
humanities, science, and commerce discipline
Personality Test
Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called
for the Personality Test, also known as the Interview.
Interview Panel: It
is conducted by a board of competent and unbiased observers who evaluate the
candidate's personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, and overall
suitability for a career in the civil services.
